WILD CHILD HERB SHOP SUSTAINABILITY PRACTICES
Wild Child Herb Shop strives to offer products and services that are good for people, plants, and the planet. I use organic practices and sustainable principles to ensure that high quality herbs go into every recipe and to improve the environmental
well-being of the community.

Organic Gardening Practices:
-
No chemicals or synthetics are used in the Wild Child Garden.
-
Worm castings and biodynamic compost are used to maintain nutrient-rich soil.
-
Cover crops are used to build and regenerate the soil during the winter months.
-
Cover crops prevent erosion, improve soil structure, and enhance moisture retention.
-
Crop rotation is used to boost soil fertility, reduce weed growth, and increase yields.
-
Native plants are chosen to reduce runoff, require less water, and support pollinators.
-
Composting is used to reduce air, water, and soil pollution and enhance soil fertility.
-
Simplicity is practiced by growing herbs that have multiple uses.
-
Non-GMO seeds are planted in the Wild Child Garden and are heirloom varieties only.
-
Hand harvesting is used to ensure that plenty of plant material remains to regrow.

Packaging & Labels: plastic packaging materials like bags, labels, and stickers account for over 40% of all the plastic produced worldwide. These items have a short usability lifetime of 6 months or less and usually end up in landfills.
Home compostable packaging & labels are made from natural materials such as sugar cane, corn or potato starch, and wood pulp which can be broken down into compost and used as fertilizer to enrich plants & soil. These items reduce the carbon footprint by requiring less energy to make than plastics, reducing landfill waste, and reducing methane, a potent greenhouse gas that affects climate change. PET/BPA Free bottles are 100% recyclable and do not leach chemicals into food and beverage products. Recyclable glass dropper bottles provide zero leakage and are 100% recyclable and chemical-free.

Reducing, Reusing, & Repurposing Practices:
-
Reducing Waste: bare root plants are purchased so that there is no pot to discard, plants are grown from seeds or cuttings, less bagged soil is used, coir is used instead of peat, clover and wildflowers are planted in the lawn, & perennials are chosen that have roots in the soil year after year.
-
Reducing the Footprint: vegetables are grown to increase soil carbon and decrease carbon emissions from grocery store food processing, and materials are sourced locally from sustainable businesses when possible.
-
Reusing and Repurposing: recyclable items are used to start seeds and seedlings.
